Removing Glasses and Contact Lenses: Interventions in 2024

Today, it is possible to have vision without lenses in almost all cases, thanks to Laser Surgery or new lenses that are inserted inside the eye.

Which surgery is best for removing glasses depends on the characteristics of the eye and age.

From the USA comes important news for removing glasses. We present in detail the new operations with the belief that the desire to eliminate glasses and contact lenses will find here the best solution for Myopia, Hyperopia, Astigmatism and Presbyopia.

Remove Glasses between 20 and 45 years

In the age group between 20 and 45, the surgery to remove the glasses is generally a Laser Surgery with which it is possible to correct Myopia, Astigmatism and Hyperopia well.

The most suitable Laser surgeries in this age group are: FemtoLasik, SMILE, PRK.

In very high visual defects, the VISIAN ICL type phakic lens implant is indicated.

Presbyopia, which would be the difficulty to see up close without glasses, occurs after the age of 40 and is not corrected well with the Laser.

Remove glasses after 50 years

The surgery to remove glasses after the age of 50 is no longer by Laser but by replacing the crystalline lens with an intraocular lens. The crystalline lens is a lens present inside the eye that becomes opaque with age, and then it is called Cataract. After the age of 50 it can be removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens even if Cataract has not occurred.

Removing glasses means eliminating the defect such as Myopia, Astigmatism, Hyperopia and also Presbyopia i.e. the difficulty in reading up close typical of age. Presbyopia depends on an aging of the lens, and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens eliminates the problem forever. There are new very sophisticated intraocular lenses that allow excellent results without glasses for distance and near.

We introduced Hi-tech intraocular lenses in Italy several years ago and so also for several years we have been using EDOF and Trifocal intraocular lenses that allow optimal distance and near vision without glasses.

Remove Glasses and Cataract

Cataract surgery is the option today to eliminate distance and near glasses forever.

Cataract is the opacity of a lens located inside the eye called crystalline. This lens is transparent at birth and becomes opaque with age. With surgery, the lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens.

Today, there are sophisticated intraocular lenses capable of correcting Myopia, Astigmatism, Hyperopia and Presbyopia. Right from the start, we have implanted many of the most innovative intraocular lenses in our clinic. We are among the few centers to use IC-8 intraocular lenses for those who undergo Cataract Surgery after corneal surgery such as curved keratotomy or LASIK.

Those who do not have cataract can still undergo cataract-like surgery to remove a crystalline lens that may still be quite transparent but has aged and is no longer able to focus on the details up close.

Removing Glasses after Cataract Surgery done years before

Patients who continue to wear glasses from afar and/or up close after cataract surgery today have new opportunities. It is possible to improve vision and eliminate glasses even years after cataract surgery.

In 2024 it is possible to exchange the intraocular lenses implanted with cataract surgery years earlier with new, more sophisticated intraocular lenses, or it is possible to add more sophisticated lenses in front of the lenses already present in the eye and thus the glasses can be eliminated both from afar and up close.

When and Why Eye Surgery should be done

It is advisable to wait until the vision defect is stable to perform the surgery to remove the glasses. Males begin to have a stable vision defect after 22 years of age, women often a few years earlier. In any case, it’s all very subjective, we only operate after a stable defect for at least one or two years. This applies to all defects: Myopia, Astigmatism, Hyperopia.

Presbyopia continues to worsen with age and should be operated on after 45-50 years of age.

Doing eye surgery has advantages and risks like everything.

The main advantages are a higher quality of vision than that achieved with glasses, the freedom of not having to think about maintenance and hygiene of contact lenses, swimming, skiing and doing all kinds of sports without additional thoughts of spectacles and lenses.

Risks of Eye Surgery

The main risks of eye surgery are infection and incomplete correction of the vision defect.

To avoid infection, it is necessary to strictly follow the ophthalmologist’s instructions and avoid dirty environments or contact with animals in the days following the surgery.

Sports practice is usually contraindicated for at least 15 days post-surgery.

Even minor trauma after surgery can have serious consequences.
