Traditional corneal transplant consists in replacing the whole central cornea with a new cornea coming from a donor
Full-depth corneal transplant is performed today less and less, in favour of the most modern lamellar corneal transplant techniques, that are: advanced keratoconus and full-depth corneal scars.
Vision recovery after full-depth corneal transplant is a gradual process and usually takes up no more than 10-12 months..
This kind of transplant is the first corneal transplant technique that has ever been performed. Is it still the most widespread technique worldwide. It consists in replacing a central full-depth portion of the damaged cornea with a healthy cornea coming from a donor.
Today, it is possible to perform corneal transplant with a Femtosecond Laser, in order to achieve a higher precision while cutting corneas.
During corneal transplant post-op it is important to schedule checkup appointments every 30-60 days for the first 12 months. Suture is usually removed after 6-18 months.
10-15% of patients experience rejections that can usually be treated pharmacologically, without having the need to perform another transplant surgery. Rejection risk is always present during the whole patient’s lifespan: this is why it is of great importance to immediately check every strange event, even a seemingly harmless red eye.
Dr. Badalà performs corneal transplant with corneal tissues coming from the Veneto Mestre Corneal Bank and Monza Corneal Bank. We suggest to undergo corneal transplant only in specialized centers where lamellar transplant is a viable option.
Dr. Badalà performs cornela transplant in Milan and Catania and works together with the most important corneal centers.

Problem: Corneal diseasesSolution: DMEK Corneal Endothelium TransplantIn 2005, after a number of visits and exams, I was diagnosed with Cornea Guttata Corneal Dystrophy and, all doctors told me that the corneal endothelial cells were disappearing and was going to become blind.
I looked ... Keep on reading this reviewfor second opinions in Sardinia, Italy and Spain, but the answer was always the same. One day my husband yelled at me “don’t give up and search the internet”. I went to my computer and searched: "Best Doctors for corneal dystrophy". I found Dr. Badalà and I decided to book a visit on March 10th, 2015.
I got to know Dr. Badalà in person: he reassured me and, with patience and simple words, explained a new technique of corneal transplant called DMEK.
He described the procedure step by step and told me I would have not become blind.
I did not know whether to cry or smile!
I underwent DMEK surgery on May 14, 2015. One month after surgery I could see colors clearly as I have not seen in years, since then at every follow-up (the last on January 26th, 2016) I keep receiving just good news.
I sincerely thank Dr. Badalà, for giving me hope and, most importantly, my sight back.
