Glaucoma Laser Surgery

Today there are innovative glaucoma laser surgeries that are more and more used instead of medications when these are not effective or collateral effects produce too much discomfort.

The most innovative glaucoma laser surgery has to be the Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty, known as SLT: it has become available in the last 5 years but it is not used yet in Italy.
Dr. Badalà performs this surgery in Milan and Catania.

In case of glaucoma, laser can be used in several ways: for example to avoid acute glaucoma in case of closed angle glaucoma through a Yag Laser iridotomy, or in case of open angle glaucoma via the trabeculoplasty laser surgery.

Glaucoma laser surgery called trabeculoplasty is meant to easy the humor acqueous drainage from inside the eye, lowering the overall eye pressure.

Historically, the Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty, known also as ALT, was performed; today the most innovative procedure is the Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty or SLT, that is less invasive, more effective and has less risks.

In case of closed angle glaucoma, another laser surgery is performed, called Argon Laser Pupilloplasty.

The most common techniques for glaucoma laser surgery are trabeculoplasty and iridotomy: both surgery are performed without the need for the patient to be admitted to hospital. Patients go to the optic clinic after putting few anaesthetic eye drops in the eye: they then seat in the laser machine and a lens is placed above the eye. A series of light impulses then are directed to the affected areas.

Surgery is completely pain free and it is not necessary to bandage the eye: after a quick ocular pressure check the patient is free to go home.

There’s a 80% success rate for selective laser trabeculoplasty during the first year (ocular tone goes back to normal values), but it is important to remember that the patient has to do regular checkups because the pressure can rise again over time.

Dr. Badalà performs selective laser trabeculoplasty or SLT since 2005 when such technique was not available yet in Italy. Today he performs selective laser trabeculoplasty in Milan and Catania.

I am 54 years old, for the past 20 years I have used eye drops to treat glaucoma.
Three months ago, I underwent a new type of laser treatment called SLT (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty), despite always being afraid of ... Keep on reading this reviewany sort of eye treatment.

I have not felt any discomfort during or after the SLT laser, I did it in both eyes together and it lasted about 5 minutes. When the Laser was over I felt much better, as I was a little scared before.

Prior to the SLT laser my eye pressure was 24/23 with different eye drops, now, two months later, is 16/15 without my previous eye drops which created a lot of discomfort.

I am very happy with the outcome.
