How laser eye surgery works and what are the best new laser techniques to eliminate Myopia, Astigmatism, Presbyopia and Hyperopia in a video interview with Dr. Badalà who introduced important innovations for laser eye surgery in Italy. Laser surgery allows you to get rid of myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia and presbyopia.Laser surgery is now absolutely painless thanks to the latest generation laser instruments. There are different types of eye lasers, the most common techniques are PRK and FemtoLASIK.
In PRK, the thin outermost layer of the cornea called the epithelium is removed, then the excimerlaseris used which, through an invisible and computerized, therefore extremely precise, beam of light, reshapes the cornea. The contact lens is placed by the surgeon during the operation and will be removed after about a week. The contact lens promotes the regrowth of the corneal epithelium which occurs in 4-6 days. During this period, vision may not be perfect because it is necessary to wait for the epithelium to heal.
In FemtoLASIK two lasers are used: a first laser called Femtolaser is used to create a thin layer of cornea which is then lifted. At this point the second laser comes into operation, the excimer laser which, as in PRK, reshapes the shape of the cornea and, at this point, the first layer of cornea which had been raised is repositioned in its place and the operation is concluded. Compared to PRK, FemtoLASIK is a technically more complex and invasive operation which however has a great advantage: it allows vision to be recovered within 24 hours.
Another newer technique is SMILE. Here the Femtolaser is used to isolate a small piece of cornea from the deepest part of the cornea which is then removed thus changing the curvature of the cornea. The excimer laser is not used here. It is a new technique that is more invasive than the previous ones and the surgical cases performed to date are much more limited than the PRK and FemtoLASIK techniques. PRK, FemtoLASIK and SMILE are three types of effective and safe laser surgery. However, in a specific case one technique may be more suitable than the other.
