The Cornea Transplant is a safe and fast intervention thanks to the innovations of 2024.
DMEK is the new type of corneal transplantat which brings great advantages:
- Fast recovery of vision,
- Low risk of rejection.
In the DMEK, only 1% of the cornea is transplanted.
The cornea is the front and transparent part of the eye, in some cases (Cornea Guttata, Fuchs’ dystrophy, after Cataract Surgery etc.) the inner layer of the cornea, called endothelium, breaks down and the cornea loses its transparency.
DMEK: Benefits
The DMEK allows to replace the endothelium leaving the rest of the cornea intact, this has great benefits:
1. The eye remains very resistant to trauma.
2. Fast recovery of vision.
3. Fast resumption of all daily activities.
4. Minimum change of glasses.
DMEK: The Intervention
The surgery is performed by making a small incision of about 2 mm on the eye; then, the patient’s diseased endothelium is removed and the new endothelium of the donor is inserted. An air bubble is then injected into the eye, which will allow the donor’s endothelium to position itself in the correct location.
DMEK: After the Intervention
The patient is required to remain lying for 48 hours after surgery.
The cornea becomes clear and transparent again about 2-4 weeks after surgery and the patient regains perfect vision.
It is possible to resume work after about 7 days; for sport it is better to wait a month.
DMEK: More Info
We were among the first to bring this Cornea Transplant in Italy in 2013. Since then, several patients have enjoyed a fast and safe visual recovery thanks to the new DMEK Cornea transplant whose technique has also been greatly improved.
You can find here the testimonials of patients on DMEK.
