While it is widely recognised that physical inactivity and pollution can contribute to issues such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, fewer people reflect on the link between these dynamics and eye health. Our eyes face new challenges and pressures that, if neglected, can lead to fatigue and visual disorders<\/strong>: we are referring to computer vision syndrome and the influence of digital devices on vision.<\/p>\n

Technology-related eye disorders<\/h2>\n

The tertiary sector is currently the largest working sector in Italy. This means that an increasing number of people work in close contact with technology and in closed environments, thus exposing their eyes to constant stress.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eye disorders related to the use of screens are no longer limited to certain regions of the world. Increased myopia, for example, has become a widespread problem in countries such as China and India, where more and more young people spend much of their time indoors and use digital devices. According to experts, reduced exposure to natural light and the tendency to focus on nearby objects for long periods of time, as is the case with smartphones and computers, are among the main causes of this phenomenon.<\/p>\n

A similar situation is observed in Dubai, where an increase in cases of keratoconus<\/a>, a degenerative disease affecting the cornea, seems to be more common among those who work long hours at computers. Here, environmental and working conditions, such as the intensive use of air conditioning, the high concentration of dust in the air and the frequent habit of rubbing the eyes, are contributing to the spread of the disease. Air conditioning, which is widespread in modern work environments, is another factor that negatively affects eye health. By reducing the humidity in the air, these systems also dry out the tear film that protects our eyes, thus increasing the risk of irritation and photosensitivity. This phenomenon can further aggravate eye fatigue and make it more difficult to tolerate light from screens.<\/p>\n
