What’s new with the cornea transplant?

It is a very different intervention than some years ago. If the front of the cornea is sick it is only the front of the cornea that is replaced with an intervention called DALK. If, on the other hand, it is the posterior part of the cornea that is sick, as for example in the Cornea Guttata, only the posterior part of the cornea is replaced and then an intervention called DMEK is performed. If the whole cornea is sick, the entire cornea can be replaced with a traditional or new artificial cornea transplant. Artificial cornea transplanta involves replacing the diseased cornea with a cornea that is built in the laboratory.

How long does the cornea transplant take?

It is a procedure that is usually performed under local anesthesia and takes about an hour.

Is corneal transplant painful?

Today it is no longer a painful operation, you do not feel sick either during or after the surgery. At most what you will have is a nuisance, as if the shampoo had entered into the eye for a period of one to four days.

How long does it take for my vision to recover after a corneal transplant?

Visual recovery after a cornea transplant is quite variable. In the case of anterior lamellar surgery, such as those performed for keratoconus, a good recovery of vision can be achieved from one month after surgery. In the case of an operation such as DMEK for Cornea Guttata, vision improves already two weeks after surgery. In the case of an artificial cornea transplant, vision may improve immediately after surgery.

How long does it take for me to resume my activities after a corneal transplant?

The recovery of a normal life after cornea transplant surgery is now much faster than it was a few years ago. You can usually resume all normal daily activities one month after surgery. One week is often enough to start reading, writing and working on a computer. For sports, it is essential to wait about a month.
